The “La Perla del Tirreno” Fishery Producers’ Organization, established in 2017, brings together fishing cooperatives from the Bagnara Calabra area. It does not limit itself solely to the sale of the catch, but promotes sustainability, traceability, and the enhancement of local species (such as swordfish, albacore tuna, and bullet tuna), with the ambition of diversifying fishing through cultural, educational, or tourism projects linked to the local maritime heritage.

The O.P. La Perla del Tirreno is a cooperative founded in 2017 in Bagnara Calabra by local mariners to add value to the traditional fishing of swordfish, albacore tuna, and bullet tuna—emblematic species of the area’s fishing sector. Thanks to ministerial recognition under EU regulations 1379/2013 and 1419/2013, the organization operates with mutualistic goals: organized product management, greater economic transparency, access to new markets, optimized logistics, and sustainable, traceable fishing.

The cooperative has promoted the creation of the quality brand “Spada di Bagnara®”, guaranteed by a rigorous set of production standards. The swordfish is caught, labeled, and delivered to the consumer using transparent traceability systems, ensuring freshness, environmental respect, and high quality standards, which are also certified by organizations such as Friend of the Sea.

With an innovative approach, the O.P. has invested in the creation of a gastronomic venue called “Pearl,” which serves as a taste laboratory, educational space, and tasting point: here, the public can get closer to fishing and fish-tourism (ittiturismo), sample typical short-chain dishes, and learn about sustainable Calabrian fishing. This model aims to reduce the steps between producer and consumer, increase product quality, and offer authentic cultural experiences.
